In 1904, Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone and a former Smithsonian board member, brought James Smithson's remains from Italy to Washington, D.C. Today, Smithson, who never set foot in the United States while he was alive, is entombed in a marble crypt in the Smithsonian Castle.
